Behold the King Is Coming!

by

In the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season, it’s easy to lose sight of its profound spiritual meaning. Yet, within the biblical narrative of Christ’s birth lies a simple yet powerful word that invites us to pause and reflect: behold. From the first chapter of Genesis to the angel’s announcement to Mary, this word calls us to open our eyes to the wonders of God’s work.

Beholding God’s Creation

The word behold first appears in Genesis 1. After creating the heavens, the earth, and mankind, God declares, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of the earth.” Here, behold is a divine invitation for Adam and Eve to marvel at the beauty and abundance of His creation. It is not merely about seeing the gifts but recognizing the Giver.

This pattern repeats throughout Scripture: God uses behold to draw our attention to His actions, His promises, and His presence.

The Prophecy of Isaiah

Fast forward to 700 B.C., when God spoke through the prophet Isaiah about the coming Messiah. “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14).

This prophecy pointed the people of Israel toward the ultimate gift—the Savior who would dwell among them. The word behold was a call to readiness and expectation, urging them to look for God’s miraculous intervention in history.

The Fulfillment in Christ

Centuries later, the prophecy was fulfilled. In Matthew 1:20, an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him.” The angel reassured Joseph that Mary’s child was conceived by the Holy Spirit and that he should name the child Jesus, “for he will save his people from their sins.”

Here, behold signifies something even greater: the arrival of Immanuel—God with us. It’s a call for all of humanity to stop and recognize the Savior who came to rescue us.

A Call for Today

As we celebrate Christmas, the word behold is as relevant as ever. It challenges us to pause amidst the distractions and behold the wonder of the incarnation. God’s invitation is clear:

  • Behold His creation and provision.
  • Behold His promises in Scripture.
  • Behold His Son, the Savior, who brings hope and redemption.

In the busyness of the season, may we take time to behold the King who humbled Himself to be born in a manger. This Christmas, let us open our eyes to the miracle of Christ’s birth and let it transform our hearts.
